One of the things we do at Tumaini Evangelistic Pre & Primary School that is different from other Primary schools is that we hold competitions for our students in Academics, Talent and Sports over the year. We even have a Bible competition since we are an evangelistic school. The spelling competition every year provides the students a chance to show off their word skills. We start with Pre-Unity (our version of Kindergarten) through Standard 7 class. The day starts with simple words and move up to not only more complicated spellings but also move to homophones to test if they can recognize which spelling of a word based on how we use it in a sentence. Simple example woud be hair or hare. We do our spelling competition different from a spelling bee. We have the student write the word on a dry erase board instead of spelling it out loud. A large part of this is because it is technically their third language and they do not always pronounce the letters correctly.
