Most of you will remember that one of the projects we pushed last year was converting our old offices into a new computer class. Thanks to a gift from Mauldin Methodist Church we were able to move forward on that project. It is now complete and the computers for the students have been purchased. I even found a broken down old CPU computer to take apart and show them the insides (you know the kind of CPU with a 3 1/2″ floppy drive still in it).

So during the first class for each group, I showed them what RAM looks like, the inside of a hard drive and what the components of a motherboard are. We discussed origins of computer language and how it has changed from punch cards and DOS commands to a graphic user interface. We even discussed the move from a bag phone that could only make and receive calls in major cities to smart phones that provide internet service in a remote African village.

I hope I get a taste of what they will be able to do with their computer class before I leave. It is the only computer class in our district at a Primary School. We are only one of a handful in the district period for both secondary and primary schools.
