Meet our Students: Angel (1)

This week I want to introduce you to Angel. Sometimes spelled Angela but she prefers to be called Angel. I also referenced her as number one. When we have multiple students with the same name, the students refer to them with a number based on when they got there. I am not sure what is going to happen in a couple of years when we have over 10 kids with the same name. Currently we have 3 Angels on site.

Angel is part of our pre-unity class which is the oldest preschool class we have. She is normally in the top 5 of her class with grades ranging from 85-94. Here she is with some of her fellow students last year as they posed for top student pictures after monthly testing.

She has a brazen spirt which makes her game to be first to try most things. It also means behind her sweet little smile she is calculating what she can get away with. Don’t mistake that statement to mean she is always causing trouble, but she likes to seek out boundaries and test them regularly. (pictured to the right with Karalee from the Mauldin mission team portraying the donkey from The Good Samaritan Story)

This serves both her and her class well when others are trying to organize the way to do something and she just does it like when she rushed to lead her class during the VBS march during the visit by Mauldin United Methodist Church missionaries.

It also means she does not like to lose. Even if she has to drag her best friend Zoe along in a two person race. I love the tongue out the cheek alsmost like Michael Jordon.

It also means she does not always understand the difference between what was given to her and what was given to someone else. As you can see she really wants to check out Gift’s baloon animal instead of just playing with hers. I call this the cow problem: Grass on the other side of the fence is always better even if it is the same.

It also means she has trouble with common boundaries such as someone’s hair. She is constantly checking out my arm hair (Most Tanzanian men don’t have any) and of course our hair is different on our head so any time she sits next to one of our missionaries (like Julie here) she is going to check that hair out.

Above are some of Angel’s facial expresssions as she watches videos during the Reading with Barnabas program. She just cannot hide how much she gets into those.

So many great qualities if they can be harnessed in the right direction! Such an infectious smile that can also try to get away with things! 😂 So enjoy these posts…brings back memories of my teaching. Lesson learned in seeing different behaviors was finding out the back stories; made understanding the child and their actions so much better. Peace and a Grace, Phyllis Sent from my iPad
